Public Service Recognition Week: Supporting public servants in retirement

Originally published 4/29/2024, Updated on 4/21/2026

Public Service Recognition Week is observed during the first full week of May and honors individuals who dedicate their careers to serving the public. From federal agencies to state, county, tribal, and local governments, public servants play a vital role in keeping communities running and supporting the wellbeing of millions of Americans.

This week is an opportunity to recognize their commitment and impact and to reflect on how employers and benefit leaders can continue supporting public servants throughout their careers and into retirement.

By the numbers: Public Service in the U.S.

Public service represents a significant and evolving part of the U.S. workforce. A few notable facts help illustrate its scope and importance:

  1. Nearly one in seven U.S. workers is employed at the federal, state, or local government level, underscoring the breadth of public service across the country.

  2. State and local governments employ millions of educators, making elementary and secondary education one of the largest public-sector workforces nationwide.

  3. Public Service Recognition Week was first celebrated in 1985 and continues to serve as a national moment of appreciation and awareness.

  4. Over time, the federal workforce has become a smaller share of the total U.S. population, reflecting changes in how and where public services are delivered.

  5. A significant portion of the federal workforce is approaching retirement eligibility, making long-term benefits planning and retiree support more important than ever.

Supporting public servants beyond their careers

As many public sector employees prepare for retirement, access to clear, reliable health coverage and benefit guidance becomes essential. Public servants deserve support that extends beyond their working years, helping them make confident decisions about healthcare, Medicare, and retirement spending.

At Via Benefits, we work with public sector employers and plan sponsors to help retiring employees navigate their benefit options with clarity and confidence. Public Service Recognition Week is not only a time to say thank you, but also a reminder of the importance of ongoing benefits education and retiree support.
